Crochet Dishcloth Pattern – for Beginners!
Crochet dishcloths are one of the easiest and best gifts to give others – co-workers, neighbors, family and friends – because they are one size fits all and everyone has to clean dishes! This free dishcloth pattern uses simple crochet stitches so even a beginner would have success with it. By combining these crochet stitches you get a pretty texture that not only looks good but works well in cleaning dishes.

To make this crochet dishcloth all you need to know are how to chain, slip stitch, double crochet and single crochet. Each stitch is explained below. For supplies all you need is a crochet hook and one ball of cotton yarn that you can find at any of your local craft and often discount stores along with your handy-dandy yarn needle.

Skill Level: Beginner
Measurements:
Approximately 7 ½” long x 6 ½” wide
Supplies

(For my dishcloths I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Pink and Aloe Vera (the green one is also scented!))
Notes
Project is worked back and forth in rows and then a simple edging is added around the entire rectangle
There are 2 edging options for this project
The key to making the texture in this stitch pattern is to work the 2 stiches (slip stitch and double crochet) in an alternating pattern – So, every time you come to a dc, you will work a sl st in it and vice versa
Abbreviations
YO (yarn over)
Hk (hook)
Lp (loop)
Ch (chain)
St (stitch)
Sp (space)
Sl st (slip stitch) = Insert hk into st, YO, pull through stitch and loop on hook
Sc (single crochet) = Insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hk
Dc (double crochet) = YO, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, (YO, pull through 2 lps on hk) twice

Pattern for the Crochet Dishcloth:
Ch 28
Row 1: Sl st in 4th ch from hk; (dc in next ch, sl st in next ch) across ending with sl st in last ch. Turn. (24 sts)
Row 2: Ch 2, (sl st in next st, dc in next st) across ending with sl st in turning chain. Turn.
**Make sure you skip the very first stitch (which is a sl st) of each row – So you will work into the first dc you see from the previous row**
Rows 3-20:Repeat Row 2 – Do not fasten off.
**If you would like a bigger dishcloth, simply continue repeating Row 2 until you get the size you like. If you fold it diagonally and the sides match up, then – tada! – you’ve made a square! 🙂 **
Dishcloth Edging Option 1:
Ch 1, work sc evenly around entire rectangle making sure to work 2 sc in each corner. Fasten off.
Dishcloth Edging Option 2:
You can also work the stitch pattern around the entire rectangle for a different look – simply continue the stitch pattern across the last row and then continue it down the sides of all the rows and across the bottom edge
Finishing
Weave in ends
Optional: Close up holes created by the edging stitches along the bottom edge with tapestry needle and matching yarn
